Pilot in Austin, TX
Pilot at GrayDUCK Gallery in Austin, TX.
opening reception: thursday, october 14, 7-9pm
exhibition dates: october 14 - november 21, 2010
"In 2005, an independent collective of artists in Minneapolis pooled their resources in an effort to gain national recognition for their innovative local art scene. That year they boldly introduced themselves with an ad in Dwell magazine and have never looked back. Pilot has become a highly sought-after group representing a diverse range of concepts and styles. These artists who are also curators, mentors and designers have brought a national eye to the Midwestern sensibility of creating art with substance and integrity. Since their inception, the group has dispersed throughout North America but not before gaining international notoriety showing in galleries from New York to Los Angeles to London. grayDUCK is thrilled to host a rare group show by this all star collective.
All members of the group are well-established full time artists. Each of the artists has their own, unique style they use in their work. John Alspach, Tara Costello and James Wrayge are abstract painters. JAO paints while in a state of intense aerobic activity to create work about energy and movement. Amy Rice and Jennifer Davis have an illustrative, whimsical feel to their work. Yuri Arajs combines found material and precise mark making. John Diebel creates cartoon-inspired line drawings, while Ben Olson is a popular self-portraitist and Terrence Payne works in oil pastels. Each member brings to the group an individual vision and style, but a clever pop-art sensibility makes them coherent as a group."

Yuri Arajs print available to support artists who have experienced homelessness
Hi Friends.
I was recently inspired when I heard, from my mom, about an organization called The Pivot Legal Society in Vancouver. They do great work on behalf of the homeless including the new Red Tent campaign. They will be using red tents to visually bring awareness to the issue to the world media in Vancouver from Feb 12 - 28, 2010. A very important time to be doing this. Visit their website and learn more about what great work they are doing. www.pivotlegal.org
So I decided to make this limited edition piece of art to raise awareness and money to support this cause, plus a little more. First, I hope to do is raise enough money to give a $500 donation to the Pivot Legal Society's Red Tent campaign. Second, to buy $1,000 worth of art supplies and distribute it directly to artists in my community who are homeless or have experienced homelessness.
For just $25, you can help me achieve this and get a piece of my art as well!

Delightful 3
Amy Rice and Jennifer Davis at the Birchwood, Mpls
Through Nov 2007
http://www.birchwoodcafe.com
From the Birchwood website:
"Mixed media artists Jennifer Davis and Amy Rice both create narrative images that delight and surprise. In August of 2006 they premiered a series of paintings and collages based on their mutual admiration of and inspiration garnered from each others work. In the show (Rosalux Gallery, Minneapolis), entitled "Delightful", each artist used elements from the others artwork to create a new piece. An additional work was created using the original "collaborative" piece and so on and so on creating a visual dialogue in paintings and mixed media pieces that were new, yet familiar. The show was a local favorite receiving "delightful" reviews from every major local print media. While this first show had been over a year in the making and included a staggering amount of work produced, both Davis and Rice stated they felt like they were just getting warmed up and in August of 2007 "Delightful Too" continued this visual dialogue at Young Blood Gallery in Atlanta, GA."
This marks the third istallment in the ongoing series.

Early September in Minneapolis: Go see some art
Two person show of Pilot artists John Alspach & Terrence Payne
Rosalux Gallery
September 4th-30th, 2007
Opening Reception: September 7th 7-11pm
Here's what Minnesota Monthly is saying about the upcoming show:
Don’t blame us if you come away with a sudden urge to buy a warehouse condominium and fill it with these artists’ works. Alspach and Payne are the reigning kings of condo art; their bold, iconic paintings hang in the hippest rehabs. It makes sense, given that Alspach creates his works from salvaged construction debris, discarded billboards, and metal signs—perfect for that industrial ethos. Payne’s portraits of his youthful peers are similarly striking, evoking both coolness and vulnerability.

Tiny Showcase: Jennifer Davis
Each piece is "around the same price as a CD, book or record..." and a percentage of each sale goes to the artists charity of choice.
They sell out super fast, (often within minutes of the art being posted) so you need to be quick. They are pretty hush-hush about who the artist will be and the print for sale (a new one goes up each Tuesday evening) , but I got a source and tonight it is our own Jennifer Davis.

Delightful Too Review
Pilot artists Jennifer Davis and Amy Rice opened a two person show in Atlanta this week at Young Blood Gallery
and received a favorable review in Atlanta's weekly arts rag, Creative Loafing:
Delightful Too: Mutual admiration
Minneapolis artists Amy Rice and Jennifer Davis
BY FELICIA FEASTER
Published 07.11.07
Delightful Too, the Young Blood Gallery exhibition of work by Minneapolis artists Amy Rice and Jennifer Davis, is infused with a friendly, two-peas-in-a-pod vibe. Like best friends sitting down to paint each others' toenails or to read racy excerpts from Harold Robbins novels, there is a charming sense of play and intimacy in this collaborative exhibition of two women who share a fascination with vintage advertisements, girl culture, birds and bunnies, sprinkle cupcakes, retro colors, and a snarky take on the past.
Favoring juicy hues of peach, melon, sea-foam green and salmon pink, Rice and Davis also share an obvious delight in riffing on each others' creations. Almost every work in the show offers a nod to the other artist, with one of Rice's artworks invariably "inspired by" one of Davis' and vice versa. The way the artists play off of each other's work evokes the bonds that often form in female friendships with their similar rhythms of back-and forth admiration and borrowing.
Rice's work is the more graphic and visibly street-art-inspired of the two. Rice works with spray paint, acrylics and the fat, black borders of stencils. Her paintings blend the look of ads from 1940s women's magazines; an irreverent, female take on street art; and a touch of Henry Darger kink. Though her clunkier technique and more garish palette can often compare unfavorably with Davis', at its best Rice's work offers poignant evocations of both the look and the emotional texture of the past. Her re-creation of the kind of barter system practiced in childhood in the self-explanatory "You Can Hold the Bunny If I Can Wear the Mask" is a good example of the artist's loaded content.
Davis tends to work on a smaller scale, using collage, painting and drawing to create surreal little vignettes. A popular motif is human bodies with animal heads and a visual style that seems to borrow from the 1970s at some moments and the '40s at others. A typically satisfying mix of color and content is the creepy "Birthday Party," in which Davis' bright, chirpy color palette extends to the seasick hues of the children's faces.
Davis' work is fascinatingly rich in both its cultural borrowings and its air of decadence mixed with preciousness.
Delightful Too. Through July 27. Young Blood Gallery, 629 Glenwood Ave. Wed. and Fri., noon-6 p.m.; Thurs., noon-7 p.m.; Sat.-Sun., noon-5 p.m. 404-627-0393. www.youngbloodgallery.com.
